Elementary School Presentation

Once a year select elementary schools such as Underwood and Joyner have their science days to learn about animals-specifically birds.  The schools invite representatives from the RDCBS and WingSpan Aviaries to make an all day presentation to the children and bring some of our birds as a 'show and tell'.

The children were very attentive as we presented information about bird species and the particular birds that brought to show the classes.  Many children had quite a few questions during our presentation that were quite interesting.  Very few of the children had seen birds such as these and only a handful had seen or owned birds of this kind.   We discussed how we hand feed a baby bird, brought samples of toys, food and books. We also raised their awareness on the birds' intelligence levels, our personal experiences, training, and their mortality raising birds in captivity versus in the wild.  Some children had stories to share of their own as well as an overall enjoyment as we brought each bird around for the children to touch and to see up close what these birds really look and feel like.  Joyner purchased and dedicated science books in WingSpan's honor for their libary.  We want to thank the Joyner and Underwood Elementary Schools for inviting us for the day and sharing our information on these wonderful birds and hopefully raise the level of awareness of what bird keeping is all about.

Also you may want to check out www.peppertalk.org a very interesting website about a young boy, and his young pet African Grey.  This young boy, Tim, is very special, with autism.
